The official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but US dollars are widely accepted, especially for bigger purchases like hotels, tours, or souvenirs. Most shops, restaurants, and hotels will happily take dollars, but it’s handy to have some riel for small purchases or local markets.
ATMs and Cards: Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted in cities and tourist areas, and ATMs are easy to find in cities—just make sure your bank knows you’ll be traveling!
- Fees: Most ATMs charge $3–6 per withdrawal. Check with your own bank for any extra fee on top.
Tips:
Keep in mind that US dollar bills should be in good condition — torn or damaged notes may be refused. Slightly marked notes are accepted in Siem Reap, but avoid torn bills at all places.
=>Carry cash before heading to remote areas.
=> Exchange Riel back to US Dollars/Euro before your departure.
Good to know: To reduce reliance on the dollar, the Cambodian government began phasing out $1 and $5 bills. Don’t worry — they’re still accepted, but for payments under $10 you’ll typically receive change in Riel.
